Rolex Coke

The Rolex Coke makes collectors' hearts beat faster

It seems that the Rolex community has a thing for soft drinks. In addition to the Rolex Pepsi, there is another variant that is highly popular with connoisseurs: the Rolex Coke GMT-Master. The black and red Rolex Coke bezel was first used in the Ref. 17670 ("Fat Lady"). As good specimens are gradually becoming rare, the Coke promises a high potential for increasing value.

Rolex Coke with a unique colour combination

The first Rolex GMT-Master had a blue and red bezel. This colour combination is now standard on watches with the GMT function, which allows a second-time zone to be displayed. Especially since the run on the Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi, almost all watch manufacturers now offer models with a black-blue bezel - some even without a GMT function.

The Coke, on the other hand, with its black and red bezel, was an underdog. During the production period of the Rolex Coke GMT (between 1982 and 2007) most GMT Master models were delivered with black or blue-red bezel. For this reason, the Coke is now a sought-after rarity on the market, which is particularly popular with collectors.

Fat Lady: the most sought-after model of the Coke

The most sought-after model of the Coke is reference 17670, which was produced between 1982 and 1988. The Fat Lady is, therefore, exclusively Coke model Vintage. With the launch of Reference 17670, Rolex introduced Calibre 3085 and a sapphire crystal for the first time in the GMT Master. The watch was nicknamed "Fat Lady" because its case is one millimetre higher and the crown protection is significantly thicker than the other five-digit Rolex references. Due to the short production time, there are only a few Fat Ladies today.

Rolex Coke yesterday, today and tomorrow

Between 1982 and 2007, the model was continuously present in the collection. However, since the six-digit references replaced the five-digit model numbers in 2007, there has been a lack of a current Rolex Coke GMT.

For years there have been rumours about a possible new edition of the black-red GMT-Master. After there was no coke model in 2019, the question arises whether there will be a 2020 model. At the time of this writing, this is not yet known. But the chances are not bad at all, because even the timeless Rolex manufacture cannot completely escape the Heritage trend. In 2018, for example, the company has already launched a new edition of Rolex Rootbeer, which has been around since the 1960s.

Rolex Air King

A cooperation between Rolex and Coca Cola

Even though the black and red Rolex GMT Masters' designation as "Coke" is only a nickname, there was actually a Rolex Coca Cola Edition in the past. Between the 1970s and 1990s, Rolex entered into various cooperative ventures with companies such as Domino's, COMEX and even Coca Cola. There are various Rolex Air-King models with the Coca-Cola logo, which were usually given away by Coca-Cola on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the company. So there is not only the Rolex Coke but also a real Coca Cola Rolex!
