Rolex 1980s Watches

While the Datejust had been a five-digit reference since the 1970s, the new Rolex Datejust 1980 (Ref. 16200) replaced the Ref. 16000 in 1988. The most incredible innovation of this evolutionary stage was the sapphire crystal that was now used. In addition, the previous calibre 3035 was replaced by the modern 3135 movement. Thus, for the first time, the Rolex 1980 Datejust references had technical features that belonged to the modern era. At the same time, their design was still characterised by the classic cases and bracelets.

Calibre 3135 as one of the best movements in the world

With the calibre 3135, introduced in 1988, Rolex produced one of the most reliable and robust movements ever. This calibre was used until 2008 and was able to stand the test of time for more than 30 years. The resilience and precision of this Rolex 1980 calibre is unrivalled. That is why the in-house movement is rightly nicknamed the "tractor". The 3135 calibre has the following features, among others:

• Date display
• Chronometer certification (COSC)
• Automatic winding
• 28,800 A/h
• Power reserve approx. 48 hours
• Blue parachrom hairspring

In 1988 Rolex presented the Ref. 16610, which was produced until 2010 and is today considered the eternal Submariner reference. The mix of vintage case and bracelet and numerous modern features makes the 16610 a perfect toolwatch. In contrast to Ref. 16800, which was produced from 1977 to 1987 (the so-called "transitional reference"), the 16610 already has a sapphire crystal, but otherwise takes up the features of Ref. 16800:

• Glossy dial or "glossy dial"
• Indices with white gold borders
• Triplock crown, thus 300 metres water resistance
• New calibre 3135

A comparable development occurred with the Rolex Pepsi in 1980: the introduced GMT-Master Ref. 16750 is the "transitional reference" in the GMT-Master collection, while the Ref. 16710, launched just in time for the end of the decade, established the modern sapphire crystal era.

Trend-setting innovations with Rolex 1980 Daytona and Explorer

The 1980s also held news for the Daytona and Explorer. The 1980 Rolex Daytona was none other than the Ref. 16520 presented in 1987, which is considered the last true Rolex Daytona: no later reference has a comparable toolwatch charm. The Ref. 16520 is also particularly sought-after among enthusiasts because it has an automatic calibre from the Le Locler manufacturer Zenith.

Rolex also had another ace up its sleeve in 1980: the Explorer Ref. 14270, which replaced the vintage Ref. 1016 in 1989 and, like the other new releases in the 1980s, also featured a sapphire crystal and white gold indices.
