Since 1775

Breguet – outstanding watches

The watch manufacturer, Breguet, can look back over 240 years of watchmaking history. Abraham Louis Breguet founded his company in 1775. For a long time, its headquarters were in Paris but are now located in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. In 1780, Breguet produced its first watches featuring an automatic winding mechanism. These were followed in 1783 by timepieces with a built-in 'gong' for acoustic time display and a few years later in 1790 by a precursor to shock protection in the form of the "pare-chute".

Since 1795, all Breguet watches have carried a secret signature as a protection against counterfeiting. However, the most famous inventions of the Breguet house were the Breguet hairspring and the tourbillon. These are now standard pieces of equipment which are used by most renowned manufacturers. Patented by Breguet in 1801, the tourbillon is a sophisticated mechanism and one of the most complicated elements of fine watchmaking. Today, Breguet continues its tradition of continuous innovation and is recognised by collectors and enthusiasts around the world.

The Breguet Marine collection

Abraham Louis Breguet was a watchmaker in the Royal Navy so it is no surprise that this Breguet collection is not only inspired by his values and ideals but also carries the Marine name. Watches in this series meet the perfectionist demands of the brand's founder and are characterised by both timeless elegance and flawless quality.

The collection's nautical spirit is particularly reflected in the steel Breguet Marine model (Ref. 5817ST / 12 / 5V8) which is offered with stainless steel or rubber straps. Another popular version is the Breguet Marine Ref. 5817BA / 12 / 9V8. This wristwatch has a case of yellow gold and is finished with a hand-guilloched and silver-plated dial and bevelled blue steel hands.

Models for the female wrist: The Breguet Marine (Ref. 8818BB / 59 / 564 DD00) is a popular women's watch. The bezel and lugs of the elegant white gold case are embellished with 58 diamonds. The hand-guilloched dial is made of natural mother-of-pearl and is decorated with a further ten diamonds. The watch harmonises perfectly with an elegant bracelet made of white rubber and finished with a navy clasp. This Breguet Marine women's watch is also available in yellow gold (Ref. 8818BB / 59 / DD0D).

For those who prefer a more classic look, there is a stainless-steel version (Ref. 8827ST / 5W / SM0). The case of this Breguet Marine women's watch is made of stainless steel and features a diameter of 34.5-millimetres.

Napoléon, Churchill and Humboldt

Breguet wristwatches on famous wrists

Breguet has always boasted world-famous personalities among its customers. Napoléon Bonaparte owned three pocket watches and a table clock by Breguet. The German naturalist, Alexander von Humboldt and the Italian composer, Gioachino Rossini as well as Winston Churchill were also Breguet clients.

Breguet – just saying the word conjures up an image of fine watches and their stylish owners. It is not surprising then that the brand name was often used by writers when they wanted to evoke the luxurious life for their readers. Stendhal, Honoré de Balzac and Alexandre Dumas immortalised Breguet in their works, all of which are now part of classical world literature.

Breguet is still considered the watch of choice for numerous well-known contemporary personalities. Its watches have also made it into the world of film: in Without Limit, Robert de Niro sports a Breguet Classique on his wrist.
